The Ferrari 857S is an extremely rare vintage sports car produced since 1955. Equipped with the legendary 4-cylinder inline with the biggest displacement of 3.4 liters that won the 1952 and 1953 World Championship, it was produced at only 4 copies, its name coming from the 857 cc of a cylinder of the engine. This two-seater competition spider with the majestic line was bodied by Scaglietti and built to counter Mercedes-Benz in motorsport, the Ferrari of the time, such as the 750 Monza, 118 LM and 121 LM not having succeeded in win. The 857S, more powerful and performing has therefore been born. This model then inherited a 3 liters of the same external dimensions, the few Type 857 S manufactured having been used as base for the development of the future Type 860 Monza which shares many technical characteristics and the same bodywork.

In the early fifties, Ferrari developed two engines for the race: a four-cylinder in-line designed by Aurelio Lampredi and V12 by Gioacchino Colombo. These two engines had characteristics which made them preferable according to the constraints, the 4-cylinder being more fuel efficient than the V12. As a result, Enzo Ferrari wanted to develop the four-cylinder in-line, especially since the 1952 Formula 1 World Championship had rules derived from Formula 2, and thus encouraged the development of this type of 4-cylinder engines cylinders. The first, a 2 liter, was developed to be successfully mounted on the 500 F2, Formula One World Champion 1952 and 1953. Two other more powerful inline 4 cylinders, 2.5 and 3 liters, were installed on the 625 TF, 735 S and 750 Monza models. In this context the S 857 participated in the Tourist Trophy of 1955 won by a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. The next season will see the development of other models, including the 860 Monza, the car having enjoyed great success in 1955 - 1956 in competitions held in America.
